Norma (Nana) Welton
1926-2021

When Nana was with us, she had a way of making birthdays unforgettable. Each of her three children got the royal treatment: a made-to-order dinner crafted just for them.

In honor of what would have been Nana’s heavenly 99th birthday, my two sisters and I joined forces to create a five-course menu we think she would have chosen for herself — we hope you’ll try a few of the recipes shown on the right.

The celebration begins with luscious Shrimp Stuffed Mushrooms, followed by Nana’s favorite retro-refreshment — a sour cream infused Pineapple-Lemon Jell-O Salad. Next comes a steaming bowl of classic Split Pea Soup, garnished with cheese crackers for the perfect crunch.

For the main dish: Chicken Rosé L'Estragon over rice — playfully nicknamed “Drunk Chicken” for its splash of wine.

No Nana-style birthday would be complete without chocolate — the darker, the better. Our finale is a decadent Double Dark Fudge Brownie Cake — so rich, it blurs the line between cake and candy.

Some of Nana’s other beloved dishes — like Scalloped Potatoes and Layered Enchilada Pie — didn’t make this particular menu, but they remain treasured parts of her cooking legacy.
